    About Carolyn

My name is Carolyn Morgan. I have over 30 years experience in working with children and their families. My core passions in my work are autism and, more recently, adoption. I am a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I have a Diploma in Psychotherapy (Child and Young People Specialism) and a PGDip in Psychotherapy. I started my career as an early years teacher in London. I had grown up with my autistic cousin and this led me to move away from mainstream teaching and retrain. I worked for several years in a special school in Walthamstow where I taught in the primary communication department.

When I relocated to the North East in 2002 I was fortunate to be put into contact with The Toby Henderson Trust, a charity which supports autistic children and their families. The success of our work at the Trust came from the early interaction, with 1:1 playroom sessions, small group work, holiday respite service, parent training and providing support and advice for educational placements. It was clear from the experience of our families that there was a gap in provision to address the mental health of autistic children and young people. I decided to train as a psychotherapist to work with this client group and set up my private practice at Toby House.

On qualifying as a psychotherapist I worked in several schools for pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. This broadened my practice to start working through the Adoption Support Fund with children and young people who were adopted. I trained as a Non-Violent Resistance Informed Practitioner to support this work.

My core training as a psychotherapist is in Transactional Analysis. In my private practice I work with children, young people and adults. I use an integrative approach which means that I draw on different styles of therapy to meet my clients’ needs. I offer creative methods including story telling, drawing, collage, sand tray, small world figures, and clay to work on issues such as anxiety, attachment, self regulation, life story, difficulties in school attendance, and understanding of self. My therapeutic work is relational, meaning that there is an emphasis placed on building a trusting relationship between client and therapist.

I am also qualified in Advanced Integrative Therapy which is an energy psychotherapy which can help to heal trauma. I now work with my dogs in the therapy room as an Animal Assisted Play Therapist. I am using Neurofeedback Therapy with clients which is an exciting new part of my toolkit.

I have three adult children, a grandson and 2 dogs. I enjoy yoga and walking on the coast where I live. I love live music and get to as many gigs as I can. I like to travel and last year I was lucky enough to go to Memphis and visit Graceland – The Home of Elvis Presley which, needless to say, was an absolutely amazing experience.

Last week, I spent four days in beautiful Northumberland for the next stage of my training to become a Certified Professional Practitioner in Animal Assisted Play Therapy® (AAPT). Cassie joined me for the trip, and we met some wonderful people and their dogs along the way. Arlo and Cosmo were her training pals! It was a warm, welcoming group, and the connection between everyone, human and animal, was at the heart of the work.
