The Balance of Connection: Staying Present for Our Child and Ourselves

I am always privileged to be asked by Sarah to speak at her annual conference and was pleased to see this year a real focus on the brain/body connection with offers of breathwork and other creative ways to support regulation in both ourselves as adults and our children and teens.

The complexity of the education system was also discussed and how best to navigate the complexities in relation to children and teens with additional needs.

The audience was mixed and included professionals, parents, foster carers and therapists in addition to adopters.

I would recommend attending this online conference to anyone who is interested and look forward to seeing what 2026 has to offer.

“Connection is the biological fuel for growth – it calms the nervous system.”

Key Questions Explored

  • The science behind connection in parenting is deeply rooted in brain development, emotional regulation and the biology of attachment.
  • How can we nurture meaningful connections with our children whilst also staying grounded and present with ourselves?
  • How do we not lose ourselves in the process?

In-Person Training at Local Primary School

Date: 21st April 2025

Introducing the framework of a Non-Violent Resistance (NVR) approach and how to adapt this in the classroom.

I was pleased that Steps to Connection had been approached to offer the above and it was great to be part of some in-person training for the education staff at this small local primary school.

Why NVR in School?

  • Promotes a calm, respectful and consistent response to student behaviour
  • Focuses on building positive relationships, increasing adult presence, and encouraging accountability without escalating conflict
  • Creates a safer, more supportive learning environment
  • Strengthens student–teacher trust and improves long-term behavioural outcomes

We had some great discussion, and I was able to see the commitment of all staff to support their learners and think about alternative ways to connect. I am hopeful that we can continue to connect to local schools.
